He’s been doing those characters on British TV years before the movies. Bruno was the first character I saw him play on late night TV as a small sketch. Ali G was a whole series that ran for a few years. Borat was an extra character he played in some of the shows in the Ali G series.
AliG Indahouse wasn’t that great unfortunately, it’s nothing like the documentary style Borat and Bruno films.
